“At last, one of the
best loved and longest running musicals in theatrical history explodes onto the
South African stage with a brand new production helmed by acclaimed,
award-winning director JANICE HONEYMAN.”
ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER’s sensational STARLIGHT EXPRESS
had its official opening night at The Mandela at Joburg Theatre last night and I
was fortunate enough to have been invited to witness this magical production
come to life on South African soil.
Produced by the
theatre’s Chief Executive Officer, BERNARD
JAY, the all-South African company filled our evening with two hours of
speed, spectacle, dynamism, daredevil stunts and turbo-charged exhilaration, combined
with dazzling sets and out of this world costumes, extraordinary
roller-choreography (that I still cannot believe is possible) and some of
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s most memorable musical hits.
“Essentially a rock
musical, STARLIGHT EXPRESS follows a
child’s dream in which his toy train set comes to life; famously the actors perform
wearing roller skates. The Joburg Theatre’s 2013 production of STARLIGHT EXPRESS will be the first ever ‘non-replica’
interpretation officially licensed by Lloyd Webber and his Really Useful
Theatre Company since the show’s inception in 1984.”
STARLIGHT
EXPRESS will keep hearts pounding and feet tapping with its breathless energy
until Sunday September 1st.
The 160
additional on-stage seats are now are sale from R250; standard auditorium
seating is available from R100. All
tickets for STARLIGHT EXPRESS are exclusively available at Joburgtheatre.com or by calling the theatre’s direct ticketing line on 0861
670 670. Unprecedented discounted rates
for groups are available by calling Joburg Theatre on (011) 877
6853.
STARLIGHT
EXPRESS in South Africa is brought to you by CITY POWER JOHANNESBURG – lighting
